The Crisis Computing team at QCRI has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research and develop creative solutions for real-world problems in the humanitarian domain. We are seeking candidates with expertise in computer vision, deep learning, and multi/cross-modal (e.g., text and image) modeling. Prior experience in object detection and scene understanding in online/social media images is a strong advantage. Additional experience in natural language processing and text mining is also a big plus for joint analysis of multimodal social media data.

Project Description: The Crisis Computing team focuses on social media data analysis tasks such as text and image classification, information extraction and summarization to solve problems in the humanitarian domain and beyond. The successful applicant will work on projects to analyze images for disaster scene understanding, damage severity assessment, multimodal learning, real-time disaster maps, etc. The output of the research will be translated into one of QCRI’s flagship projects called Artificial Intelligence for Digital Response (AIDR,, which has been used by several humanitarian organizations including UN OCHA and UNICEF, among others since 2013.

Job Summary: The successful candidate will be researching, designing, and developing novel computational models, algorithms, and innovative applications to process social media data to solve real-world problems, such as damage assessment, needs assessment, etc.


  • PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of computer vision, deep learning, and/or natural language processing
  • Strong record of major accomplishments and publications in top-tier venues
  • Must be highly proficient in Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow; experience in Java is a plus
  • Ability to think creatively, work collaboratively, and take ownership of projects
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills and good presentation and communication skills
